NorthSec 2024: CTF empowering Cybersecurity Talent

NorthSec, Canada's largest annual applied security event, brings cybersecurity professionals and students for a unique blend of knowledge sharing and hands-on challenges.

Ashley Manraj, Pvotal's CTO, our in-house techno-sophist, has been a regular attendee at NorthSec for the past decade: he believes in the value of a carefully curated forum that allows for learning about the latest industry trends, brainstorming with experts about the novel exploits, and leveraging these trends to proactive build defensive systems that are cost-effective, scalable, and rooted in security.

What is NorthSec?

NorthSec is a two-day conference featuring talks and workshops from the brightest minds in cybersecurity. It culminates in an intense 48-hour Capture The Flag (CTF) competition, where teams test their skills in various hacking scenarios. This year's CTF tested participants' skills in various areas of cybersecurity. Challenges included reverse engineering, web attacks, exploitation, as well as securing networks, hardware, wireless devices, and even specialized systems like ATMs and election infrastructure.

Inside the CTF:

The NorthSec CTF is renowned for its robust infrastructure, up to 100 participating teams are provided with a dedicated environment to prevent interference. In the CTF competition, players take control of assets and search for hidden "flag" files containing text like FLAG-thisisanexampleflag. Submitting these flags earns teams points, allowing them to compete for the top spot on the scoreboard. Teams competed in a variety of hacking challenges, including:

  • Reversing
  • Web attacks
  • Cryptographic attacks
  • Exploitation
  • Network lateral movement
  • Hardware attacks (badge, radio, lock-picking)
  • Forensic
